Less Tech More Talk: Strengthening Communication Skills of Generation Alpha Kids with Positive Parenting
Modern parenting places great importance on communication rather than discipline or punishment.
Today, parents are often encouraged to take a gentler approach by encouraging discussion and open communication with their children, while setting clear boundaries and expectations. This approach, known as positive parenting, emphasizes growth through mutual respect, encouragement, positive reinforcement, and guidance as to what is right or wrong.
Family communication involves understanding and interaction among its members. This can be expressed in verbal or nonverbal communication.
Verbal communication includes the use of words in everyday conversations. This is a vital part of communication as it allows family members to discuss opinions, share their thoughts and ask questions.
Nonverbal communication, on the other hand, refers to gestures, tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions which, on their own, are able to convey different emotions. Both of these are essential in building strong family relationships.
Healthy communication between parent and child can help build and support positive social development of a child. During conflicts, parents can strengthen this bond by remaining firm yet open-minded while listening to their child’s perspective while guiding them toward better choices.
Because parents serve as role models, their actions can strongly influence their children’s behavior. By practicing respectful, honest, and calm communication, parents set a good example for their children to follow.
